Banteay Srei is a 10^th-century temple was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Its name means “Citadel of Women” and is the only major temple of Angkor not built by a monarch. Instead credit went to a courtier, Yajnavaraha-a famous scholar and philanthropist.

Banteay Srei is constructed from red sandstone and many of its elements appear in comparatively miniature form making it unique among the Angkorian temples. Almost every surface has been hacked into beautiful shapes and depictions that can still be admired today. Motifs include fierce monsters, multiple-armed protectors, goddesses and false doors. Indeed, the ‘near perfect ornamental technique' is praised by every visitor to the temple.
